The Havanese is the perfect definition of a small, cute dog. These dogs are covered in soft, silky fur and are very small in stature. Although they are small, they are also very independent and have high energy levels. They are closely related to the Bichon breeds and come in a variety of colors such as white, brown or silver. Breed History

The Havanese has its origins in Cuba and is the national dog of Cuba. In the past, some Spanish citizens migrated to Cuba and came along with their companions which were known as Tenerife dogs.

Over the years, these dogs naturally developed into the Havanese and were very popular amongst Cubans. However, at some point in history, it nearly went extinct.

During the Cuban revolution, some members of the nobility migrated to the United States with their dogs. The dogs were eleven in number and became the ancestors of the Havanese we have in our world today.

Temperament

The Havanese is a very lively and fun-loving breed. They are very affectionate towards their owners and family. They quickly bond and get attached to their owners and as such, get sad when left in isolation for long.

This breed suffers greatly from separation anxiety because of their deep attachment to their owner. The Havanese is also extremely sensitive to the tone of one’s voice.

Using harsh words or harsh methods of discipline could cause them to become sad and recoil. This breed is very sociable towards children and other animals. They are one of the most intelligent breeds and are not cowardly despite their small size.

Environment

Havanese dogs are best suited for indoor living. They can easily survive in a small apartment without a yard. They do not like kennels and are not suited for kennel living.

Generally, these dogs like cool environments. In the winter, it may be too cold for them and it may be too hot in the summer for them to play outside. As such, the home should have a moderate temperature at all times.

Exercise

Just like every other breed out there, this breed needs a regular exercise routine. They need to be taken out on walks daily with a leash.

This would enable them to exercise their legs and explore the environment as well. The walks should be short as they cannot keep up with long walks.

The speed should be kept moderate and the walk should be put to a halt the minute the dog begins to show signs of exhaustion.

Grooming

The Havanese has a long silky coat which is prone to tangling. As a result, many owners prefer to cut the fur short. To prevent splitting, you can apply a specific lotion on the fur.

Fortunately, this breed of dogs do not shed much and require only an occasional brushing. They have a lot of hair around their faces so it is important to constantly check their fur for crumbs or debris.

Their teeth should be brushed regularly in order to prevent oral infections. The ears should be checked occasionally for debris or excess wax.

Finally, the nails should be clipped or trimmed in order to prevent the dog from harming itself.
